U.S. Visa B-1/B-2 Questions for Parents: Real Talk from Someone Who Helps Families Every Day

If you are a parent from Pakistan, especially Lahore side, and your heart is set on visiting your son or daughter in America, I know exactly how you feel right now. The B1/B2 visa interview scares most people. You keep thinking what if the officer asks something and I get stuck?

I run applyusavisas.com and I have sat with hundreds of moms and dads just like you. Some were refused before, some were first timers. Today I am sharing the exact questions they ask parents and how real people answered them and got the visa. No copied stuff, just practical talk.

Why do you want to go to the USA?

Officer usually starts with this. Don’t make it complicated.

I guide parents to say something that sound normal:

“Actually sir, my son is there and it has been almost four years since I last hugged him. I miss my grandchildren too. I just want to spend some good time with them, eat home food together and see a little bit of America before coming back.”

ake your time when speaking… and let a little emotion come through.

How many children do you have?

Straight question.

“I have total four kids. Two sons and two daughters. One son is settled in U.S., others are here in Pakistan with us.”

Always mention the ones living in Pakistan. It shows you have reasons to return.

What do your children do in the U.S.A.?

Be clear, no confusion.

“My elder son is doing software job in California. He is on H1B visa since 2022. He got married there and now I have two grandkids.”

If studying, tell university name properly.

How long do you plan to stay in the U.S.A.?

This is tricky. They want to know if you will overstay.

“We are thinking of staying two to three months only. We already booked return tickets for end of August because my younger daughter’s school exams start after that.”

Show you have fixed plans back home.

How much pension do you receive annually?

If retired, this comes almost every time.

“I get 78,000 rupees pension every month from my retirement after 30 years in education department. Yearly it becomes almost 9-10 lakh.”

Keep your pension book or slips in your file.

What is your annual income?

Tell everything combined.

“From pension, rent of our small house and one shop, total income is around 15-18 lakh per year. My son in U.S. will handle all our expenses while we are there.”

Do you have a bank statement? Can you show your bank statements?

Always carry them and say yes.

“Yes sir, I have last 7 months statements with me. Balance is good alhamdulillah.”

Show them without hesitation.

Do you have any fixed deposits?

“Yes, we have 28 lakh in fixed deposit in Meezan Bank. It will complete next year.”

It gives good impression of stability.

What property do you own in your home country?

Very important. Officer wants to see your roots.

“We have our own 10 marla house in Bahria Town Lahore where we live. I also own one shop in Liberty Market that gives rent. Property papers are here if needed.”

Bring photocopies.

Do you pay income tax?

“Yes, I file every year. Here are my recent tax returns from FBR.”

What ties do you have to your home country that will ensure your return?

This is the main question. Be honest.

“Look sir, my full life is here in Pakistan. I have my house, my other three children, their families, my 80 years old mother who stays with me. I get pension every month. I have no plan to live in America. This trip is only to meet my son.”

Tell 4-5 strong reasons.

Have you visited other countries?

“Yes, we visited Dubai for shopping & Saudia for Umrah. Came back on time both times.”

Have you visited any country recently?

Give proper dates and places.

Have you traveled to the U.S. before?

If no: “This is first time.”

If yes: Tell when and for how long.

Have you traveled to other countries?

Mention all trips you made. It helps.

Who will take care of your family members while you are away?

My other son shares the same residence with his wife.. They will take care of everything including my mother.”

Can you provide an employment letter from your employer?

If job is there: “Yes, here is the letter. Company approved my leave.”

What do you do for a living?

“I was a bank officer. Retired last year. Now I look after my properties and family.”

Does your son visit India? (or home country)

“Yes, he came to Pakistan last year in Eid. He visits almost every year.”

What visa type is your child holding in the U.S.A.?

“He has H-1B visa. I brought the copy.”

Where is your child studying/working?

“He works in Google office in New York as project manager.”

What places do you intend to visit during your stay?

We will stay with our son and visit some historical places with grand-kids

Will you be attending any events or ceremonies?

Yes. We want to attend that.

“My son bought insurance for us. Here is the paper.”

What arrangements have you made for health insurance during your stay in the U.S.?

My son bought insurance for us. Here is the paper. Tell company name if you know.

Have you applied for a U.S. visa before?

Answer truthfully. If refused before, explain what changed now.

Do you have relatives in other countries?

“I have one cousin in UK but very less contact. All close family is here.”

What is the nature of your trip?

“Family visit only. Meeting my children and some sightseeing.”

Do you have any other relatives in the U.S. besides your children?

No.

What should I bring to the B-1/B-2 visa interview?

I always tell parents this list:

Passport with 6 months validity, DS-160 page, appointment letter, old passports, bank statements, pension papers, tax files, property documents, son’s invitation letter, return ticket print, and clean clothes.

How long does the B-1/B-2 visa interview process take?

It take, 4-5 minutes max. But getting slot in Pakistan takes patience.

Can I speak in my native language during the B-1/B-2 visa interview?

Yes.

Can I bring someone with me to the B-1/B-2 visa interview?

Mostly no. Only the applicant goes inside. Old parents can take one helper sometimes.

What if I don’t have some of the required documents?

Just explain politely. Strong answers can still get you a visa.

How soon can I apply for the visa before my intended travel date?

3 to 4 months before is best. Don’t buy expensive tickets early.

Look, I remember one aunty from Faisalabad. She was so nervous but when she spoke about her house and old mother, officer approved immediately. The key is being real.
